By first providing historical context of Red Hook, I identify the principal characteristics that make the area opportune for a new space of redevelopment. I then employ three research strategies to formulate my analysis (1) a collective interpretation of public space in a city (2) an evaluation of the interactions between urban and natural environments, (3) three case studies to reference successful connection of these elements. Information and ideology was collected from a broad scope of sources to ensure a diverse and comprehensive analysis. This analysis culminates into a proposal for an urban-natural space in Red Hook, City and Sea Park. The space is defined in three layers, the breakwater, the park, and the center, each performing as a system of public interaction and environmental improvement. The breakwater will act to establish and protect the marine ecosystems in the area, the park will provide a public space for social activity, and the center will serve a tool for community engagement and mobilization. The proposal identifies both short-term and long-term solutions to implementing the components of development, allowing the space to form on a gradual, localized scale and create an effective, vernacular space for Red Hook.
